[And neither does Mia, she'd respond, if she wasn't distracted by that image. She recognises Maya's dark hair immediately, eyes trained on the jellyfish, mouth slightly ajar. She doesn't recognise the, uh... body, that Maya's carrying.]
Hey...
[She starts to ask about it, but falls silent as she watches Maya struggle to pull this very long-limbed man away from the surrounding yellow rocks.]
[Mia asks, as though she didn't just hear Maya ask a question about it. Clearly she knows more than Mia does. She glances away from the jellyfish for just a moment (which for now just seems to display Maya yelling at a dead man, in all fairness) to get a good look at Maya's face to read her distress.]
[ maya continues staring it..... honestly, it should have occurred to her that these are memories, so she's fair game, but seeing it play out like this..... ]
That's.... that's my memory..... from the second mission....
[With the confirmation that, well, at least Maya is still going to watch it, Mia turns her attention back to the memory. She doesn't have an answer for Maya, but she still has more question.]
That man... isn't that.... Bill?
[wrong, but. at least she's thinking of the right guy.]
[Mia doesn't hesitate to ask more questions now that she has something here. Maybe she should be more concerned with how, but she cant help but wonder what she's being shown.]
This is something you remember, right? This really happened?
[It's to that response that Mia turns her head fully to Maya and just stares at her. She doesn't change her expression, doesn't even raise her eyebrows-- just gives the most expectant stare.]
[ if this were anyone but her sister, maya would continue doing this song and dance of dodging the subject and being super wishy-washy. fortunately, it is mia, so she pauses, bringing a hand up to her mouth. ]
Promise me you won't think I'm crazy?
[ honestly, she knows mia would never think that, but it's.... well, it's a lot. and up until now, maya has never actually properly thought about how crazy the whole thing was. she just did it. ]
[ even by maya's standards, things have been pretty unbelievable. there's so much she couldn't even begin to describe. ]
[ will... kind of fits under that category, but she's going to try. she speaks slowly, twiddling her thumbs. ]
Will... isn't human. He's, um, well, he's a kind of angel.... but not like you'd think. It's... They're called "Pieces" and they're.... well, in order for him to really exist, he needs a contract. A master he can serve, in exchange for..... part of their life force, I guess. Like... shared.
[ she glances back at mia tentatively. ] Is this even making any sense?
[ good enough. mia's like, super mega smart, so she doesn't have any doubts about her sister understanding, she just doesn't know if she's explaining it clearly enough. ]

[ the first one is just a brief memory of one of the mermaids here, day to day life, and maya peers around mia excitedly as she watches. ]
See, see?
no subject
[Mia leans a little closer to watch the little jelly-memory mermaids swim about and do their thing.]
That's just amazing...
[the things they encounter as reclaimers are life-changing. Mia reaches out but stops herself from touching it, looking to Maya to confirm-]
Can you touch them?
[Or do you just kind of have to wait for the jellyfish to float past?]
no subject
[ the memory continues to play out. maya gives the thing a pat on the top of its head. cute? ]
no subject
But no index, or anything like that. Ah, well.
[More reason to watch through as many as possible.]
no subject
[ that being said, maya's presence and patting makes the image within change, now it's... a memory involving maya? in the desert? hm. ]
no subject
Hey...
[She starts to ask about it, but falls silent as she watches Maya struggle to pull this very long-limbed man away from the surrounding yellow rocks.]
no subject
[ will is indeed very long-limbed and long in general. maya tilts her head at the jellyfish to get a look, then stares. ]
W-Wait a second.... how....?
[ is it psychic??? ]
no subject
[Mia asks, as though she didn't just hear Maya ask a question about it. Clearly she knows more than Mia does. She glances away from the jellyfish for just a moment (which for now just seems to display Maya yelling at a dead man, in all fairness) to get a good look at Maya's face to read her distress.]

That's.... that's my memory..... from the second mission....
[ she stares. ]
But... how?
no subject
That man... isn't that.... Bill?
[wrong, but. at least she's thinking of the right guy.]
no subject
[ maya says that more to herself than mia. but, uh, on the topic of mia: ]
Um... Will, actually. But yeah, that's him.
[ how is memory maya lifting him, what a mystery ]
no subject
[Mia doesn't hesitate to ask more questions now that she has something here. Maybe she should be more concerned with how, but she cant help but wonder what she's being shown.]
This is something you remember, right? This really happened?
no subject
Y-Yeah... it was during the second mission... but I don't know how the jellyfish got this.... 'Cause, it's like, my memory?
[ maybe it really is reading her mind. ]
no subject
Maybe that's how it recorded all of these things. From someone's memory.
[Mia suggests, watching as the tiny memory Maya pleads with a body.]
Did he die?
[She asks, more quietly.]
no subject
[ there's a beat, as maya gets caught up with watching it, then she shakes her head. ]
No, I.... we, um..... it's complicated, but he ended up being okay... ish.
[ how does she even explain contracts? ]
no subject
no subject
Promise me you won't think I'm crazy?
[ honestly, she knows mia would never think that, but it's.... well, it's a lot. and up until now, maya has never actually properly thought about how crazy the whole thing was. she just did it. ]
no subject
I'm pretty sure crazy is the name of the game now, kiddo.
[She puts a hand on Maya's shoulder.]
Whatever you've got, I promise-- I trust you, and I believe you.
no subject
[ even by maya's standards, things have been pretty unbelievable. there's so much she couldn't even begin to describe. ]
[ will... kind of fits under that category, but she's going to try. she speaks slowly, twiddling her thumbs. ]

[ she glances back at mia tentatively. ] Is this even making any sense?
no subject
[She's quick, at least. It doesn't sound possible, but they just saw images played on the backs of jellyfish. There is no more impossible.]
Did you make this kind of contract with him?
no subject
.... Yeah. It was the only way to save him.
[ and you can bet she didn't read the tos ]
no subject
(Of course I could expect something like this from you...)
You're sure of it... [More a confirmation than a question.]
He hasn't been any trouble, has he?
[she'll beat his ass-]
no subject
Well.... he's a bit of a handful. [ she says that fondly. ] Kinda like Nick.
[ only with more murder and maiming ] But no.... he acts like a jerk, but he's a huge softie inside. Trust me.
no subject
[It's other people she doesn't trust.]
But you don't mind if I talk to him, do you?
[Just, you know. To muscle him into being a good boy-]
no subject
[ it's always really heartening to hear. ]
Of course not! Just know that, even if he acts mean, he's a huuuuuuge softie deep down. He's just bad at expressing himself.
[ mia can handle will, though, maya is confident. ]
